Desser have been in the conservatory furniture business for over 100 years. They are extremely passionate about providing top quality stylish conservatory furniture.
Desser is proud of its roots as its heritage stretches back over four generations! This legacy began during WWI when Isaac Desser was sent to the front line in Belgium. It was at this time that he was introduced to Flemish craftsmanship and different kinds of baskets. Thus Desser was born.
As a family owned business, it came from humble beginnings, business began at the front of a terraced house in Manchester. In the late 1990s and 2000s Desser continued to evolve as they imported wickerware from areas such as Europe and China. Since then Desser has become an influential leader in the cane furniture industry.
Desser is now one of the leading importers and distributors of cane furniture from the Far East in Great Britain. Desser offers ranges that show the true beauty of natural rattan.
They show you how rattan can be combined with modern fabrics to create a contemporary suite for your home. Desser prides itself on providing you with long-lasting cane furniture that you will be able to enjoy in your home for years to come.
Rattan conservatory furniture
Conservatory furniture needs to be durable, conservatories are known for their fluctuating temperatures. Rattan is the perfect material for conservatories, Desser use high quality cane which is naturally flexible.
Rattan is a tall climbing plant, similar to bamboo, it is harvested and then cut to 13 feet. Once cut the plant is left in the sun to dry out. The inner fibres are removed and used to make wicker conservatory furniture. Every piece of Desser conservatory furniture is handmade and made to the highest standards.
Sustainable practices
Sustainability is at the forefront of what Desser do and is a crucial aspect of their business plan. Desser have a strict policy in place for sourcing rattan, ensuring that both farmers and factories are supported in some of the world's poorest countries.
Desser sources their rattan from Indonesia, Indonesia is the world’s largest supplier of rattan. Growing rattan has a strong social significance and various communities in Indonesia are supported because of this. The people within these communities are provided with a regular income. The rattan industry is very labour intensive so it is important to Desser that the workers have good working conditions and fair pay.
Rattan will only grow if it is surrounded by other trees, farming rattan encourages forest preservation. This is because the cane plant survives as a runner, relying on other trees and plants. The rattan plant also grows in difficult environments, like floodwater, these types of areas would normally be unworkable.
Rattan grows incredibly fast, it grows more than 2cm every day and can grow up to 6m every year. Rattan can be grown and harvested in 2-3 years whereas most hardwoods need 20-30 years.
Caring for your cane furniture
If properly cared for cane furniture can last a very long time, cane furniture is low maintenance and requires an occasional gentle cleaning.
To dust your suite you can use a vacuum cleaner, make sure that this is on low setting. Vacuuming is perfect for a light clean but will not clean a build up of grime and dirt.
For a deeper clean use warm soapy water and a soft cloth, ideally this should be done as soon as you notice a stain. Too much water can damage cane, ring out your cloth to remove any excess water. Rattan absorbs liquid so you will need to pat dry the cane.
